How the strand works

A strand is three lamps hung in a row: a Spark, a Puzzle and a Venture. This is how they are picked, lit and counted.

Three lamps, three kinds of play

The Spark is a one-minute brain game: Flash Grid, Quick Sums or Odd One Out. It wakes you up. The Puzzle is a logic grid (Bridges, Binary, Lights) or a picture (Jigsaw, Sliding Picture) and asks for a few calm minutes. The Venture sends you out: a flag or map round, or a darts or bowling challenge.

The lamps open one after another. When one is lit, the next one is offered with a single button. You can still open them in any order by tapping their buttons.

How the games are chosen

Each lamp has its own pool and its own rotation. The Spark pool has three games, so every three days each of them appears once; the Puzzle pool has five, the Venture pool four. Within each block the order is shuffled from a fixed seed, and a game never appears on two days in a row.

The level follows the week. Monday and Tuesday are gentle, Wednesday, Thursday and Sunday steady, Friday and Saturday stiff. On a stiff day a Spark game starts at level 3, a jigsaw has 48 pieces and a flag round draws on almost every country of its region.

Rays

Finishing a game lights its lamp with one ray. A good run adds a second, an excellent run a third. For timed brain games the bar is a score; for puzzles it is solving without a hint and inside a target time; for quizzes the number of right answers; for darts the finishes and for bowling the spares. The full table is on the daily page.

Only the first finish of a day counts. Replays are welcome but do not change the rays, which keeps the comparison with friends fair.

The streak

A day with all three lamps lit is a full strand. Full strands on consecutive days form your streak. If you lit all three yesterday and have not finished today yet, the streak is still alive and waits until your midnight.

The glow calendar shows the last five weeks. Each square is coloured by that day's glow, the sum of its rays from 3 to 9, and a full strand gets a bright edge.
